Rotary Roasters
at Sweetwater Festival
In an effort to increase the
awareness of our local Rotary club, the decision was made
to participate in our community’s Sweetwater Festival’s
Barbecue Cook Off. The Rotary Club of Milledgeville
formed an awesome cooking team. The team set up a tent
with our Rotary Club banner, two grills, tables and
chairs. The team entered a whole hog entry, pork shoulder
entry, and Brunswick stew entry. The team began cooking
on Friday, Nov. 2 throughout the night, and finished on
Saturday morning. Judging began at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday
morning. The festival’s visitors were allowed to walk by
and watch the different teams. The city estimated 13,000
attended the festival. After judging, our club invited
Rotarians, their families and friends to join Rotary
members for lunch.
Approximately 50% of the club
members, their families and friends helped cook or man our
tent during the festival. Set up was on Friday at noon
and the festival was over on Saturday evening at 7:30
p.m. Ten Rotarians stayed up through the night to watch
over the fire.
Rotarians’ spouses, children,
and friends all came out to help with the cooking and
serving.
$1,579.54 was spent on the
project. The money was raised through tee shirt sales,
winnings from the cook-off, and personal donations.
There will always be a need to
better communicate to others the mission of Rotary. This
project provided us an excellent way to get our name
before a large group of people and also to provide great
fellowship within our club.
The Rotary Roasters won 4th
place in whole hog and was named “Grand Champion Team
Local” along with prize money of $750.00.
