Dictionary
Project
The Dictionary Project is an
on-going initiative to promote literacy within our
schools. 536 dictionaries were distributed to every 3rd
grade student in Baldwin County. In addition, 26 teachers
in the local school systems received a dictionary as well.
The team leader selected five
interested Rotarian to help deliver the dictionaries to
five different schools in the area.
We were invited to personally
distribute the dictionaries at each of the schools. The
principals and teachers at each school participated in the
process. Pictures were taken at each location and
submitted and printed in the local newspapers
As the 3rd grade
students prepare for standardized testing, these
dictionaries will be used as invaluable tools to teach
them prior to the actual test. Even though we are able to
look up just about everything on the internet, our
students need to learn and understand how to properly use
a dictionary. The teachers were grateful to have these
dictionaries and many of the students were so happy to
have their very own dictionary. They couldn’t wait to
write their name on the inside cover.
We also purchased an electronic dictionary
for the only student in Baldwin County who is blind. He
was so excited and his teacher was thrilled to have this
device to help him succeed in school. |
